I love a-line skirts. They are extremely forgiving, are comfortable to wear, and look great on every body type. I can’t tell you how delighted I was when, several years ago, I came across a retail store that sells dozens of these, year round.

Let me tell you why: Ann Taylor has several a-lines to choose from every time I visit one of their stores. Their a-line skirts are cut right – they tend to lay just below the navel and fall to the knee. They’re long enough to be conservative and flattering, while short enough to be hip and avoid the dowdy look longer a-line skirts sometimes give.

Ann Taylor makes a-line skirts in both casual and office-appropriate fabrics. They aren’t especially cheap, but there’s almost always a clearance going on or a coupon to be had. If you sign up for their email list, you’ll regularly receive coupons for 10-25% off. For cheaper, more casual a-line skirts you may want to visit their sister store Ann Taylor Loft.

Since I already have skirts in most of the neutral colors, I went for something a little different and bought a black and white patterned skirt. Notice how figure flattering it is – I’d feel comfortable wearing it just about anywhere. Add a button-up black shirt and a blazer, and it can go to the office. Wear it with a nice t-shirt and flats, and it’s great for a house party. A pair of wild red shoes would make it a particularly striking ensemble.
