Last weekend I was amazed at how many gorgeous a-line skirts were on display at the mall. Although I already have several, the temptation was too great. I ended up trying on dozens and added four more to my collection (at under thirty bucks a pop, I might add).

Spring Skirts

As I’ve said before, I love the a-line…it’s comfortable, forgiving, and works for all sorts of occasions. Because a-lines are full skirts (particularly the ones on sale this season), it can be difficult to decide what tops and shoes to choose. This article will show you how to make the most of the a-line this Spring.

The Basics:

Just so we’re all on the same page, an a-line skirt is a skirt that flares out at the bottom making a capital “A” shape.

What to Look For:

The best length for an a-line is to the knees. Any shorter and the skirt becomes less versatile, any longer and it can look a bit frumpy. If you do choose a longer skirt, never choose one that hits on the widest part of your calf (this will make your legs appear much thicker).

A-line skirts should drape over your hips generously, but they shouldn’t bulk you up. Look for skirts that have a smooth line when you put them on. Beware of pockets that cause lumps or make the fabric fall unevenly. Personally, I love my 10-panel a-lines. But, if you’re more comfortable in shapely skirts (i.e. your the pencil skirt kind of gal) try a-lines with a single panel slimmer cut instead of full skirts with puffy linings or multiple panels.

Fabrics:

For Spring and Summer causal wear, cotton is my fabric of choice. It’s lightweight, breathable, and can often be thrown in the washing machine. Silk can be a good option if you’re looking for something a bit more dressy. You will find quite a few skirts in linen, but beware of these: linen is notorious for wrinkling the moment you sit down.

Tops:

The trick with tops is to choose pieces that will accentuate your waistline. Wearing bulky or flowey tops with an a-line skirt will make a girl look twice her size. Opt for slim cut v-neck t-shirts (white cotton is a good choice here). Avoid the extra long t-shirts that have been in style lately and go for something a bit shorter. You may also want to invest in some short-sleeve casual jackets. With one or two buttons, these will accentuate a small waist and add a bit of structure to the outfit. For spring, in particular, a slim fit cardigan is a great topping piece. Gap has some gorgeous 3/4 sleeve cardigans for sale right now - although the tables at my local store were pretty picked over. If you want to wear your a-line with a looser fitting shirt, consider adding a casual belt at the waist.

Shoes:

For everyday wear, a pair of black or white flip flops is perfect. Try to purchase some that are a bit nicer than your typical rubber beachwear. (I found a cute pair of white flip flops with leather thong straps at the Gap). Wedges are another great option for adding some class to the outfit. If you work in a “closed-toe policy” office then a closed-toe wedge (such as the Report Calico shoe) would work great with your a-lines. Finally, to move your look from day to night, consider purchasing some strappy sandal high heels. Add a dressy shirt and some heels to an a-line and your beach outfit can easily be worn to a wedding.

Where to Find A-Lines:

My favorite place to find a-line skirts is Ann Taylor. Other great places to look include Ann Taylor Loft, SkirtSpot.com, Banana Republic, and Anthropology. I had wild success last weekend in a small mall shop called Urban Wear, but unfortunately, they don’t seem to have a web presence.
